As a System Development Engineer I at Amazon, you’ll play a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth operation of these complex systems that process billions of products and handle hundreds of millions of updates daily. You’ll be part of the Services Support Team within the Catalog Support and Programs (CSP) division of ASCS, where you’ll directly contribute to Amazon’s mission of providing a seamless and reliable shopping experience for customers across the globe.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will be responsible for supporting ASCS Engineering teams, focusing on service level issue support for tier 1-3 systems. Your duties will include:
- System and Service Ticket Management: Handling incoming system and service tickets for multiple products, features, and services.
- Software Deployment Support: Assisting with software deployment in both staging and production environments.
- Problem-Solving and Solution Delivery: Providing logical, maintainable solutions to defined problems, delivered on time using appropriate technologies.
- Adhering to Best Practices: Learning and applying current engineering best practices, receiving feedback on designs, code, and procedures, and continuously improving.
- Operational Excellence: Identifying and addressing technical issues, calculating costs of proposed solutions, making technical trade-offs, and contributing to the overall operational excellence of the team.
- Compliance Risk Management: Driving company-wide campaigns to keep compliance risks under control for ASCS systems, such as SAS and Shepherd.
As a System Development Engineer I, your day will involve tackling a variety of tasks, from solving complex system issues to managing routine tasks. You’ll be expected to:

- Be Proactive: Show initiative and energy in solving problems, often anticipating and addressing issues before they escalate.

The CSP team acts as a single point of contact for issues related to Amazon’s catalog systems and tools, offering program management and worldwide user technical support. CSP is responsible for implementing business logic and configurations, integrating new catalog feeds, and onboarding new vendors to expand Amazon’s selection. The team also drives strategic cross-functional programs that span multiple catalog engineering teams, ensuring that the systems continue to grow and adapt to Amazon’s evolving needs.
Basic Qualifications
To thrive in this role, you’ll need:
- Educational Background: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering or a related field.
- Programming Skills: Knowledge and experience in at least one modern programming language, such as C, C++, Java, or Perl.
- Automation Experience: Experience in building tools for automation, including building, testing, releasing, or monitoring.
- DevOps/SysOps Experience: At least 1+ years of experience in a large-scale software development environment.
- Debugging Skills: Strong debugging and troubleshooting abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
Additional qualifications that will set you apart include:
- Python Proficiency: Experience with Python scripting language.
- Distributed Systems Knowledge: Understanding of highly concurrent, high-throughput systems and complex distributed systems.
- AWS Expertise: Familiarity with AWS services and concepts.
- Global Collaboration: Experience working with teams across different time zones and participating in handoff processes.
- Software Development Lifecycle Knowledge: Understanding of the full software development lifecycle.
